Moving lines of poetry written from the front line by Imam 'Abdullah ibn al-Mubarak, the great Muhaddith, Faqih, Zahid, Mujahid, Warrior-Poet, pupil of Imam Abu Hanifah and Shaykh of Imam al-Bukhari, to Fudayl b. 'Iyad al-Tamimi, the great 'Abid, Shaykh of the Makkan Haram, pupil of Imam al-Shafi'i:
يا عابد الحرمين لو ابصرتنا
O Worshiper at the Two Holy Sanctuaries, Had you witnessed us
لعلمت انك في العبادة تلعب
You would have known that your worship is mere play, frivolous;
من كان يخضب خده بدموعه
فنحورنا بدمائنا تتخضب
For every tear you have shed upon your cheek, We have shed in its place, blood upon our chests.
أو كان يتعب خيله في باطل
فخيولنا يوم الصبيحة تتعب
You are playing with your worship, While worshipers offer your worship, Mujahideen offer their blood and person (life).
ريح العبير لكم ونحن عبيرنا
رهج السنابك والغبار الأطيب
The smell of nice perfume of is for you, And our perfume is the dust and dirt (which is more pure)
ولقد اتانا من مقال نبينا
And it has reached us from the sayings of our Prophet
قول صحيح صادق لا يكذب
This is a true correct saying, in which there is no lie.
لا يستوي غبار خيل الله في
The dust of the people of Allah is never equal
أنف امرئ ودخان نار تلهب
To a thousand men, whilst the smoke is climbing.
هذا كتاب الله يحكم بيننا
This is the book of Allah between us
ليس الشهيد بميت لا يكذب
The martyr is not dead - and this is no lie
